Southwick House has been notified by the Kansas Department of Commerce of an $800,000 Community Facilities CDBG toward the building of a new transitional housing facility for women and families.

Southwick director, Susan Brinkman learned of the award in a call earlier this month from 17th District Senator Mike Argabright.

“Congratulations to the Southwick House and all of our community members who have committed time and efforts towards the CDBG grant and this program,” Argabright said, “and thank you for your continuing efforts to improve Emporia and Lyon County.”

The award will be used for building a new 9,000 square foot transitional housing facility at 115 E. Logan Ave.

“This is a significant piece of our fundraising,” Brinkman said, “and we are so grateful to our leaders at the state and our Lyon County Commissioners for their support of our project.”

Awarded from the Kansas Department of Commerce and sponsored by municipalities, the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program provides funding for projects that help low- to moderate-income neighborhoods thrive. Projects range from sidewalks to community centers, youth job training programs, and much more.

"Lyon County has a rich tradition of supporting community facilities and is proud to sponsor this Community Facilities CDBG award," stated County Commission Chair Ken Duft. "We extend our gratitude to Southwick House for their ongoing dedication to enhancing the quality of life for all residents of Lyon County."

“These funds significantly further our mission to bring back transitional housing services to Emporia and our surrounding communities,” said Jeremy Dorsey, President of the Southwick board of directors. “Southwick House could not have gotten this far without the support and faith of community partners like the Lyon County Commissioners and our state leadership.”

The gift, along with others, places Southwick House at 50% their goal of $3.6M with construction planned for late 2025.

“The opportunity to build a new facility like Southwick House is remarkably special and rare for rural communities,” said Susan Brinkman, Director of Southwick House. “We expect to be a leader and model for transitional housing in the state of Kansas.”

Southwick House closed on a six-acre parcel of land located at 115 E. Logan Ave in September 2024 where the future home will be built. The home continues the legacy of the Preston and Carrie Southwick Plumb family of providing housing supports for women and families in the region.
